Speed Geeking

Sounds awesome, right!?  Basically we sat at a numbered table and over the span of an hour we had multiple speakers come to our table and share different information (apps, ideas, products, etc.) in 7 min presentations.  Gordon shared the "Big Words" presentation in a previous post, but here are some other bits from some of the other presentations.

1. Teamie

This is a website that is similar to Schoology.  We spent time talking about strengths and weaknesses of different social network school platforms

2.  5 Points you didn't know about Google Drive:
  • Adding vs. Moving- Basically if you choose to move a file from one folder to another, it's location is changing.  If you Add (Shift+Z) the document now exists in two folders but is still the same. (Gordon and Shannon comment in if I am missing pieces)
  • Sharing can cause a loss of information-  If you share a document to someone and not the folder, and they choose to move the document it will be lost from both their drive as well as your drive into "the abyss"
  • How to protect your documents- Share the existing folder to others you are collaborating with (VIEW ONLY RIGHTS) and then the specific documents give edit rights.
  • Don't use the "Get Shareable Link"-  What happens when you use the "get sharable link" it says "turn link sharing on".  What this does is it shares the document AND it opens up the folder that the document is located in.  This could be sketchy if you have private documents in the same folder that your shared documents are.  Instead click on "Advanced " at the bottom right and share the link that is shown.
  • Presenter ran out of time for #5

3.  Big Words - See Gordon's Post :  http://icshkms21centurythoughts.blogspot.hk/2014/12/one-word-summary.html

4.  National History Day-  This is something similar to academic fair, Beth can speak more into her thoughts on it.  Basically a history fair where students can compete with different schools around the world.  More information here:  NHD.org

5. Online Tools:

Repository that you can add text, video, images that works very linear.  Could be used for laying out a unit of information or course information

    Canva.com- Create infographics and posters

Adobe Voice- Similar to VoiceThread-giving students the ability to voiceover information in a presentation form.
6. International Battle of the Books- Similar to what we do in our libraries already.
